“What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”
I remember when I was very motivated to living a healthy lifestyle. I went to the gym every other day and made sure that I was eating the right kinds of food. I felt physically clean during those times and everyday was one day closer to my goals. However, I wasn’t that faithful to my goal that often times, I find myself eating a lot of chocolates. It tasted good every time I’d eat them, but I would feel so bad right after. Physically, I feel like puking; mentally, I feel like I’ve defiled myself and ruined everything that I worked on. However, after reading this passage, I realized that it’s not what we put in our mouths that defile us but what comes out from it.
We are so conscious on the things that goes into our mouth but not with what comes out from it. In the context of this passage, Jesus is telling His disciples that what goes into our mouth will just go out of the body. But what comes out from it is from the heart and what’s in our hearts show who we really are. If what’s in our hearts are evil thoughts- murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander, these are the things that defile us. Our hearts, if not in sync with God, will defile us.
This passage has pointed me to how defiled my heart is. The things that have been coming out of my mouth lately are not so pleasant. It showed how bitter and hateful I’ve been. It’s time to reevaluate my heart and make sure that it overflows the grace of God.
How about you? Are the things coming out from your mouth pleasing to God or do they defile you?
